Hibernian turns 'blue' in 2019

The horses will be racing with special purpose when they take to the track this Saturday for the latest instalment of the annual Hibernian Charity Race Day.

A mainstay of Queensland’s country racing calendar for more than a century, the once a year event has raised more than $1 million for groups like Mt Olivet Hospital, Boystown, RACQ Lifeflight and most recently, Cancer Council Queensland.

This Saturday will take on a different tone as the club names a new beneficiary, working with Blue Tree Project to not only raise money but more importantly awareness for mental health.

Club president Tim Kelly said the new partnership is a perfect opportunity for Beaudesert locals to check-in with each other.

 “The hope is that people can come and enjoy a safe, fun day out with friends,” he said. “Starting a conversation around mental health can be difficult, but by working with Blue Tree Project we’d like to help spark that.”

When the gates open at 11 AM punters will be treated to all the entertainment and excitement the Hibernian Race Day has become famous for.

“Our yabby races are always a popular side event to the on-track action, with a small crowd cheering on their yabby it’s an exciting way to raise some extra money for charity,” Mr Kelly said.

Of course, the horses are the main draw card, especially the $14,500 Hibernian Cup.

“The Cup always attracts plenty of interest because at 2450 metres it’s the longest distance race in Australia on the day,” Mr Kelly said. “We’ve seen some thrilling finishes in the last few years, plus it’s always good to see the prize money go to a local horse.”

The first race runs at 1:10pm, punters can catch the Beaudesert Hotel and RSL courtesy buses to the track.
